How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on Haultopia starts with one question: will this product work for the person who is shopping for it? For our standing desk guides, that means your room, your setup and the weight you need to lift.

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with your room and your setup

An L-shaped or corner desk takes much more floor space than a straight desk, and a heavy monitor setup needs a stronger frame.

We check the desktop size, the shape (including left or right returns on L-shaped desks), the height range and the weight capacity the maker lists. When your room limits the choice, we say what to measure.

2. We compare specs and features

We look at the number of motors, the frame, memory presets, drawers and storage, and the controller. We also note the warranty terms the maker lists.

When a detail comes from the maker, we say so.

3. We look at buyer feedback

We read through what buyers report after setting up a desk. We look for patterns, like wobble at full height, hard assembly steps, error codes or damaged tops.

One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.

4. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A product that's great for one buyer may score lower in a guide written for another.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

5. We keep pages up to date

Products change, and some disappear from stores. Desk brands also rename and replace models often, so we check each model name before we write about it.

When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have built or used every desk we cover.

Our guides don't replace the maker's assembly and safety instructions. Electric desks have motors and moving parts, so follow the maker's steps for assembly, weight limits and clearance.

We make no health promises, such as for posture or back pain.
